Saturday 14 November 2009, 7.30pm, Buckfast Abbey
Our theme for this is taken from the Roman Catholic Feast of Christ the King, which falls on the last Sunday of the liturgical year (the weekend after our concert). Voces will be providing music for Mass on that day at Buckfast Abbey (see the 'Forthcoming services' page) so it seemed a good idea to link the two events.
Because this Feast is a modern institution (dating from 1925) there is no Renaissance music written specifically for it. There is a huge repertoire, however, of works which suit the theme in general terms, and the concert promises a rich variety of music. Playing a central role will be versions of ‘O Rex gloriae’ (O King of glory) by Luca Marenzio and Andrea Gabrieli, together with a Mass setting on the same words by Palestrina. Also on the menu will be settings of ‘O bone Jesu’ by Richard Dering and Loyset Compere; the double-choir ‘O Jesu mi dulcissime’ by Giovanni Gabrieli; and various settings of ‘O Domine Jesu Christe’. Jonathan Watts will be joining us to provide some organ works and occasional accompaniment.
